The London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) began as the Westminster Health Society in 1903, a time of poverty and shockingly high mortality. Distressed at the conditions they saw around them, three individuals embarked on an ambitious plan to change them.
Over 100 years before the first official children’s centre and 45 years before the NHS, the Westminster Health Society helped to introduce the first health visiting programme in London. This included health education and training, clinics for maternal & child welfare and training in domestic skills. It was largely due to our three founders that maternal and child welfare and personal health services became available in Westminster.
During the Second World War, we opened our first nursery to support mothers working in the war effort. During the Blitz the nursery was temporarily housed in the air raid shelter of the Tate gallery!
As the needs of the community changed over the 20th century and health conditions improved, we focused our services on providing Early Years education and care through our nurseries. This enabled parents to go back to work, and children to get the best possible start in life.
New Addition to the LEYF Family!
Burgess Park Nursery has been serving the local community since 1998. Children have access to two enclosed outdoor play areas, and thrive in their learning and development due to the excellent teaching. Staff discuss and assess children’s starting points and interests with parents while their children settle into the nursery. This enables staff get to know the children’s capabilities and to provide activities which challenge and interest them. Staff are very caring towards children and treat them with respect and affection. We’re very proud of our nursery and would love to show you around! Please get in touch to arrange a visit.
We’re located in Peckham, providing care for children from 3 months to 5 years. We’re open 7.30am to 6.30pm, 51 weeks a year.
A Message from the Manager
Hi, my name is Tanya and I have been the nursery manager at Weir Link for two years. The staff team and I strive to ensure each child in our nursery is happy, well cared for and fully supported as they grow and learn. I most enjoy the magical moments young children share with us, such as their first words and first steps, and seeing the children grow and develop their own personalities before they embark on their journey to school. The nursery is based within the Weir Link Children’s Centre, we have three separate learning spaces including a large open plan classroom for under 2s, 2-3s and preschool.
